Redshirt senior Shane Brown (Davidson, N.C. / North Mecklenburg HS) scored three runs and redshirt senior Joe Yermal (Bel Air, Md. / McDonogh HS) tossed five strong innings as Charlotte baseball logged its first road win of the season, 7-1 at Winthrop, Tuesday night at the Winthrop Ballpark. The 49ers improve to 6-2 on the year, dropping the Eagles to an 0-8 start.

Brown singled with two outs in the top of the first against Eagles freshman starter Jacob Strong. He stole second and scored on a double from third baseman Shane Basen (Waxhaw, N.C. / Marvin Ridge HS) for the 1-0 lead. Basen scored and was replaced at second on another RBI double, this one from redshirt senior catcher Ross Steedley (Granite Quarry, N.C. / East Rowan HS) for the 2-0 lead.

Staked to a lead, Yermal did not allow a hit until the fourth inning, shutting out the Eagles until they scratched a run across in the fifth. By that point, the Niners had added runs in the second and third for a 4-1 lead after five. Yermal limited Winthrop to just three hits and the one run, with four strikeouts.

Yermal was replaced by sophomore Brock Hudgens (Jamestown, N.C. / Southwest Guilford HS), who tied his career high with five strikeouts in just 2.1 innings, carrying Charlotte to the eighth.

The 49ers scored two more runs in the eight, on RBI singles from first baseman Miguel Rodriguez (Cape Coral, Fla.) and J.J. Elseser (Brunswick, Ga.), who has hit safely in seven straight games, the team-high total for the season. Brown walked to lead off the ninth, stole his second base of the day, and scored after a wild pitch for his game-high third run of the day. It was the third game of Charlotte's last four in which Brown scored three runs and pilfered at least two bases.

Micah Bryan (North Wilkesboro, N.C. / East Wilkes HS) and Corbin Shive (Salisbury, N.C. / East Rowan HS) finished the game on the mound and held Winthrop scoreless in the final innings for Charlotte.

Yermal got the win (1-1). Strong took the loss (0-1). In two innings, he allowed three earned runs on two walks and four hits. Three Eagles relievers gave up the other three runs to Charlotte.

Elseser and Basen led the way with two hits each. Four different 49ers had an RBI, with two wild pitches and passed ball scoring the other three runs.

The 49ers return home to face Wagner in a four-game weekend series. Game one is Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium.

NOTES: Brown entered the week as the Atlantic 10 Conference leader with nine runs and six stolen bases, increasing those totals to 12 and eight after the game... His two walks also gave him a team-best eight... Basen leads the team with 12 hits, but Elseser leads with a .440 average... Yermal's win pushed his career total to 25, second-most among active players in the nation.
