Sophomore Tyler Barnette (Hickory, N.C. / Hickory HS) and two other Charlotte pitchers tossed a combined two-hit shutout in game one of a doubleheader as the 49ers defeated Saint Peter's College 10-0 Saturday at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium. Offensively, third baseman Shane Basen (Waxhaw, N.C. / Marvin Ridge HS) had his second three-hit game in as many days to help the 49ers to a 2-0 record to start the season. The Peacocks are off to an 0-2 start.

Barnette, a 2011 Freshman All-American and the 2011 A-10 Rookie of the Year, worked out of trouble several times, after allowing the leadoff runner aboard in the second, third and fourth innings via a hit batter and a pair of walks. He held SPC to one hit in 5.1 innings, striking out four and walking two.

The 49ers jumped on the board in the first inning after outfielders J.J. Elseser (Brunswick, Ga. / Brunswick HS) and Shane Brown (Davidson, N.C. / North Mecklenburg HS) started the frame with back-to-back singles to put runners at the corners with no one out. Basen grounded into a double play for the first run of the day before he singled his next three times at the plate. He led off the fourth with a singles and came around later in the inning to score on a single from designated hitter Corbin Shive (Salisbury, N.C. / East Rowan HS) for the 2-0 lead.

Senior catcher Ross Steedley (Granite Quarry, N.C. / East Rowan HS) led off the fifth with the team's first home run of the season a line shot over the fence in left center on the first pitch he saw in the at bat. It was the first or two runs for Charlotte in the inning.

Charlotte added six more runs on four hits, including the team's first triple of the season, a liner into the right field corner from outfielder Tony Montalbano (New Orleans, La.) to salt the game away.

Redshirt sophomore reliever Jordan Hudson (Lexington, N.C. / West Davidson HS) made his return to the mound after missing last season due to injury. He inherited a runner in the sixth from Barnette with one out and induced an inning-ending double play to keep the Peacocks scoreless. Senior reliever Chad Rothlin (Hickory, N.C. / Fred T. Foard HS) allowed one hit in the final three innings to earn his first save of the season.

Montalbano and Shive had two hits each for Charlotte. Basen and Shive led all players with two RBI each.

Game two is underway, look for the recap later tonight.
