Mackenzie Wartenberger enters her fourth season as the assistant Cross Country and Track & Field (Middle Distance) coach for the Charlotte 49ers.
Wartenberger has established herself as a coach in the mid-distance area, where she has coached three NCAA outdoor qualifiers in the 800m in her first three years at Charlotte (Chase Eckard - 2010, Aaron Kauffman - 2011 and Maraya Slatter 2012). In addition to these highlights, she has assisted Head Cross Country and Distance Coach, Ed Schlichter, in coaching 57 all-conference selections in Cross Country and Indoor/Outdoor Track & Field, producing 18 Atlantic-10 Conference champions, most recently in the 2012 outdoor women's 800m (Maraya Slatter - 2:08.48) and the women's 4x800m (8:54.94). Both men's and women's teams have each won three team titles in indoor and outdoor track combined since Wartenberger has joined the staff and the middle distance athletes have contributed substantially in those performances.
Wartenberger also oversees the middle-distance strength and conditioning workouts, and assists Coach Schlichter in all aspects of recruiting and home meet management.
The cross country student athletes under Coach Schlichter and Coach Wartenberger's direction have also excelled in the classroom earning the Athletics Department highest team(women's) GPA (3.536/ 3.479) for the Spring 2009 & 2012 semesters with over 30 Cross Country athletes on the A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll over the past three years.
Prior to Charlotte, Wartenberger (then Pierce) competed for the University of California, Berkeley in the 800m and 1500m and was a NCAA Championships Qualifier, USA Track & Field Championships Qualifier, and the 2008 MPSF Indoor Conference Champion in the 800m.
