|Volleyball Honored Seniors, but USM Won 3-0 Friday|
Charlotte said goodbye to its two seniors, playing volleyball on the Halton Arena court for the final time and Southern Miss came and secured its spot in the Conference USA Tournament with a 3-0 win (25-18, 25-12, 25-14) Friday night in league action. The win puts the Golden Eagles at 15-13 overall, 6-7 in league play. Charlotte falls to 12-16 on the season, 2-11 in conference. The loss eliminated Charlotte’s hopes of a weekend sweep and the final berth into the league tournament next weekend.
There were four ties and two lead changes in the opening set, with the Niners jumping out to a 9-3 lead. USM slowly reeled in the score and tied the set at 14. They didn’t trail again until the third set.
Southern Miss hit for a .309 average, with just 10 errors in 97 attacks. Charlotte was held to an .054 mark, their third-lowest in league play this season.
The 49ers were led in kills by sophomore Carly Ochs (Town and Country, Mo. / St. Joseph’s Academy), who recorded eight. Freshman Claire Kreuz (Boerne, Texas / Samuel Champion HS) added seven. Sophomore Michelle Hovey (Raleigh, N.C. / Lighthouse) had 17 digs to lead the team. Hovey leads C-USA with a 5.16 digs-per-set average.
Seniors Amanda Videmsek (Highland Heights, Ohio / Beaumont School) and Taylor Cannon (Elizabeth City, N.C. / Camtech HS) were honored in a pre-match ceremony highlighting their time with the 49ers. Videmsek has 1,006 career kills, leads the team in that category this season and Cannon is second on the squad in attack percentage and blocks, while third in kills.
The 49ers will play their final match of 2013 on the road, at UAB, Sunday at 1 p.m. Eastern.
