With the season winding down to its final two weekends, Charlotte volleyball will take to the road for its only in-state conference rival in a Sunday 2 p.m. match at East Carolina. The 49ers and Pirates are playing as conference foes one more time before ECU makes the jump to the American Athletic Conference next year, making this game the sixth time they meet as conference opponents.

The 49ers will enter the match at 11-15 overall, 1-10 in Conference USA. Charlotte swept ECU last season in a pre-conference tournament in Greenville on August 25. It was the third-straight win for the 49ers in the series. In 27 all-time meetings with the Pirates, Charlotte owns a 15-12 edge in the series.

ECU is 13-16 overall, 3-8 in league matches. The Pirates are 6-4 at home this season in Minges Coliseum.

Charlotte has the league leader in digs, in sophomore Michelle Hovey (Raleigh, N.C. / Lighthouse). She is the only player in the league with more than five digs per set, currently at a 5.03 average so far this season. Hovey needs 98 digs in the last three matches to beat the all-time single-season mark. She has breached the 30-dig mark three times this season, setting and tying her own school record with 38 in two different matches this season. She collected 31 digs in Charlotte’s lone conference win, a 3-1 decision at home against UTEP this past Sunday.

Senior captain Amanda Videmsek (Highland Heights, Ohio / Beaumont School) is poised to become just the 18th volleyball player in school history to reach 1,000 kills, which she can do with 25 more this season. She is 12th in the league with a 3.34 kills-per-set average this season, leading Charlotte in that department. She has cracked the 20-kill mark three times this season, including a season-high 22 in the Sunday win over the Miners.

Sophomore setter Britney Leigh Held (Brookfield, Wis. / Brookfield Central HS) is also chasing a milestone, needing just 18 assists to become the 22nd player in team history to get 1,000 in a single season. She is fifth in Conference USA with 10.45 assists per set in 2013.

The Pirates hold the 12th and final spot into the conference tournament, but a win by the 49ers could keep hopes alive to take that spot if they can win out. The Pirates rank below Charlotte in all five major categories in the league’s statistics heading into the weekend.

Charlotte plays one last home match the following Friday on Senior Night. The 7 p.m. match, against Southern Miss. follows a 4 p.m. men’s basketball contest in Halton Arena.
