Charlotte volleyball made it a clean sweep for the weekend in Norfolk, taking out Bethune-Cookman 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 28-26) Saturday to finish the Spartan Classic at Echols Hall, hosted by Norfolk State. The 49ers have won three matches in a row, and five of their last six to improve to 6-4 on the season.  The Wildcats slip to 1-6 overall.

The 49ers did not trail in the match until the third set, which featured nine ties and two lead changes. Charlotte’s seniors did the heavy lifting from a kills standpoint. Captain Amanda Videmsek (Highland Heights, Ohio / Beaumont School) paced the 49ers with 13 kills, nine digs and six blocks. Classmate Taylor Cannon (Elizabeth City, N.C. / Camtech HS) contributed 10 kills for the Niners, adding two digs and two blocks. The senior duo was named to the Spartan Classic All-Tournament Team, with Videmsek earning Tournament MVP honors.

The 49ers trailed by a slim margin for most of the final set, until they tied the score at 22. A Bethune-Cookman kill and Charlotte attack error gave the Wildcats a match-point situation. A kill from freshman Claire Kreuz (Boerne, Tex. / Samuel Champion HS) and a B-C error tied the score again at 24. The score was tied again at 25 and 26 before Cannon put down a service ace and the Wildcats committed an error to end the match.

Charlotte hit .260 in the match, limiting Bethune-Cookman to a .125 attack percentage. For the weekend, the 49ers outhit opponents .284 to .051 for the three matches in the tournament.

Setter Britney Leigh Held (Brookfield, Wis. / Brookfield Central HS) had 35 assists to finish with 99 for the weekend, exactly 11 per set for the win streak. Sophomore libero Michelle Hovey (Raleigh, N.C. / Lighthouse) collected 15 digs in the match, for a team-best 36 for the weekend.

Charlotte will play its only weeknight road match of the year Tuesday night at North Carolina A&T, starting at 7 p.m. in Greensboro before the home opener Friday night at 7 p.m. against South Carolina State as part of the 49er Invite.
