|Sweep of UMES Puts Volleyball Above .500|
A career-high 10 kills from Charlotte junior middle Savannah Gaster (Johnsonville, S.C.) was enough to lead the charge in a 3-0 sweep (25-15, 25-20, 25-10) of Maryland-Eastern Shore Friday afternoon in day two of the Spartan Classic, hosted by Norfolk State at Echols Hall. The 49ers grab their first winning record of the season, at 5-4, dropping UMES to 0-7.
The 49ers set season highs in attack percentage (.361) and services aces (nine) in the sweep, their third of the season.
Senior captain Amanda Videmsek (Highland Heights, Ohio / Beaumont School) became the first player to pass 100 kills for the season with five in the opening set. She finished with seven, tied with two teammates, and sits with 105 for the year.
Charlotte trailed on nine of the 120 points played in the match, trailing by two points just one time in the second set. They held the Hawks to a .064 attack percentage in the match.
Sophomore setter Britney Leigh Held (Brookfield, Wis. / Brookfield Central HS) produced 31 assists and five digs, while sophomore libero Michelle Hovey (Raleigh, N.C. / Lighthouse) added a game-high 10 digs.
The 49ers, winners of two in a row for the second time this season, will finish their weekend in Norfolk with a match against Bethune-Cookman at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
