Charlotte pushed through for its first win of 2013 in a three-set win (25-17, 25-23, 25-19) against Charleston Southern to conclude the Davidson Wildcat Classic Saturday at Davidson College. The win pushed the 49ers record to 1-2 after the opening weekend.
For the third-straight match, the 49ers were led offensively by freshman Claire Kreuz (Boerne, Tex. / Samuel Champion HS), who was the lone 49er in double-figures with 11 kills. Kreuz only committed a pair of errors to finish with a team-high .429 attack percentage. She has 43 kills in three matches for the 49ers. Kreuz was named to the All-Tournament team of the Wildcat Classic.
The Niners made short work of the Buccaneers thanks to holding CSU to a .202 attack percentage. The 49ers made only 16 errors in 107 attempts for a .262 attack percentage. Six different 49ers had five or more kills, and sophomore setter Britney Leigh Held (Brookfield, Wis. / Brookfield Central HS) logged 32 assists in the 1:24 match.
The 49ers were led defensively by sophomore libero Michelle Hovey (Raleigh, N.C. / Lighthouse), who collected 11 digs in the victory. She is averaging 4.25 digs per set so far this season, with 51 total in three matches.
The 49ers will play four matches next weekend in the Country Inn and Suites Invitational in Chattanooga, starting with a 10 a.m. contest Friday against Tennessee-Martin.
