After five matches and nearly three full weeks on the road, the Charlotte volleyball team returned to Halton Arena to a 3-0 home loss (25-18, 25-23, 25-16) at the hands of A-10 foe Xavier Friday night. The 49ers slip to 6-10 on the season, 0-4 to start Atlantic 10 Conference play. Xavier is 13-5 on the season, a perfect 5-0 in league action.
"I'm not upset about our effort tonight," said Niners head coach Chris Redding. "Xavier is playing at a Top-50 level and we need to get better and more consistent to be able to play at that level."
Xavier was able to push out to a 7-4 lead, only to have the Niners fight back to a 12-all tie in the frame. The opening set went back and forth until a 17-17 logjam late before an 8-1 run by the Musketeers to close out the stanza.
Senior setter Sheri Davis (Cape Coral, Fla. / Evangelical Christian HS) was had four kills and no errors in nine attempts to lead the team in kills in the first set.
In the second set, Charlotte took a 3-2 lead and did not trail in the period until a 7-1 late Xavier run for the only lead change of the set in the two-point victory.
The Niners again grabbed the lead early in the third set, but the Musketeers mounted an 11-2 run in the middle of the set and coasted to the three-set sweep.
Junior outside hitter Bianca Rouse (Columbia, S.C. / Keenan HS) led the team with seven kills, followed closely offensively by junior Shannon McClean (Cypress, Tex. / Cy-Woods HS), who had six. Charlotte junior libero Jenna Litoborski (Lemont, Ill.) led all players with 18 digs. She has 12 or more digs in five of Charlotte's last seven matches. Davis finished with 19 assists.
Charlotte has dropped its last six matches.
The 49ers will host the other A-10 unbeaten team Sunday, when the 5-0 Dayton Flyers visit at 1 p.m.
