The Charlotte 49ers were able to battle at times, but proved to be no match for No. 18 Dayton in a road sweep by the Flyers 3-0 (25-14, 26-24, 25-18) on Saturday afternoon at the UD Arena in Atlantic 10 Conference volleyball action. Charlotte drops to 12-12 overall, 3-6 in the A-10. Dayton is 19-3, with a perfect 9-0 league record.

"I felt we came out flat, but Dayton is also such a strong team," said Niners head coach Chris Redding. "I was pleased with how we responded in set two. We just came up two swings short. Now we need to make sure we step up and improve as we have to be the team that works harder and improves more than the teams we will face for a second time through the conference."

Dayton jumped out to a 7-3 lead and added an 8-1 run to get an eight-point lead in the opening set to cruise to the 1-0 match lead.

In the second, Charlotte came out to a 3-0 start, but Dayton fought back to a five-point lead at 18-13. Charlotte then went 2-for-1 in points scoring, not allowing consecutive points by the Flyers to tie the set at 24. A Flyers kill and a 49ers error ended the set.

Charlotte grabbed an early 7-3 lead in the third set and held a lead as late as 11-9, but the Flyers allowed Charlotte to score on its own serve twice in the rest of the set, while stringing together a 4-0 run and three pairs of 2-0 runs to edge out the match.

Charlotte was led offensively for the second straight day by sophomore Bianca Rouse (Columbia, S.C. / Keenan HS) with nine kills. Senior Kat Hicks (Kaneohe, Hawai'i / Kalaheo HS) added seven kills. Junior setter Sheri Davis (Cape Coral, Fla. / Evangelical Christian HS) had the best all-around day for Charlotte with four kills, dour digs, four blocks and 24 assists. Sophomore libero Kalan Thompson (Statesville, N.C. / West Iredell HS) led the defensive effort with 12 digs.

Charlotte starts the second half of conference play with a Friday night home match versus George Washington at 7 p.m. in Halton Arena.
