GREENSBORO, N.C. –
The Charlotte women’s tennis team mustered just one singles win Wednesday afternoon, dropping a 6-1 decision to UNC Greensboro, in its final road match of the 2014 campaign. The Niners captured both of their singles triumphs in three sets in an attempt to close the gap after UNCG jumped out to an early edge.
Charlotte (5-11) claimed its only singles win at the No. 4 position, as junior Natsuko Takayanagi
rallied and handed Jamie Grinberg a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 defeat.
The momentum nearly carried over to the next court, at the No. 5 spot, as sophomore Tyler Baker
battled in a tough contest with Amy Ellis before falling in a third-set tiebreaker.
The 49ers’ junior Lisa Grosselius
also pushed her opponent, Kayla Gammie, to three sets before falling at the No. 2 position.
Charlotte’s lone doubles triumph was at the middle slot, as freshmen Victoria Pahlett
and Macy Vonderschmidt
knocked off the Spartans’ Yasmin Franco and Grinberg 7-6 (7). Unfortunately for the 49ers, the win was in the third match to finish after UNC Greensboro (7-9) had already locked up the point and early 1-0 lead.
The Niners will return to action at 3 p.m. Friday when they begin a regular-season ending three-match homestand at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex by playing host to cross-county foe Davidson. UNC Greensboro 6, Charlotte 1 Singles
