IRVING, Texas – Charlotte freshman Macy Vonderschmidt has been recognized by Conference USA as its March 25 Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon. The accolade is the first of her career and the first for the 49ers this spring.
“Macy has done a fantastic job for us this spring,” head coach Michaela Gorman said. “She has been working very hard since she got here in August and this honor is a tribute to her hard work and dedication to the team.”
Vonderschmidt collected the honor after extending her career-long winning streak to six this past week, earning a pair of victories for the 49ers at the No. 4 position. Her six-straight singles match wins mark the longest run for any Charlotte individual this year and move her into the team lead with seven dual match triumphs.
Both of her victories last week came in straight sets, while her triumph Saturday against Western Carolina assisted in the Niners’ overall team win, their fourth straight at home.
After starting the spring at the No. 5 spot, she has made a seamless transition to the No. 4 slot with a 3-1 record at her new position.
The McKinney, Texas, native, was also one-half of Charlotte’s No. 2 doubles pairing, which earned a decisive tiebreaker victory Saturday. It helped lift the Niners to the point and the difference in the contest against the Catamounts.
Vonderschmidt is the first 49ers weekly award winner by Conference USA, as all the previous recipients were chosen as Atlantic 10 honorees. It marks the first overall in program history since Anna Ekelund was tabbed the Atlantic 10 Performer of the Week March 26, 2012.
The freshman and the rest of her Charlotte teammates will return to the courts at Noon Friday when they play host to Middle Tennessee in the first home Conference USA match of the campaign. The 49ers will be on the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex courts again Sunday, welcoming Coastal Carolina to town for a 10:30 a.m. contest.
