CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte women’s tennis team battled back from an early deficit to pull out a 4-3 home victory over USC Upstate Friday afternoon at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex. The 49ers earned all their points in singles action to down the visiting Spartans.
“We battled through a tough USC Upstate team today and we were able to pull out a victory,” head coach Michaela Gorman said. “We will use this as a building block for our upcoming matches.”
USC Upstate (1-10) jumped out to a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. The No. 3 slot was defaulted to Charlotte due to lack of available players for the visiting side.
The 49ers then helped even the score with three singles triumphs before the No. 6 match was defaulted to them, again due to the lack of available players for the Spartans.
Charlotte (3-5) grabbed its singles wins in straight sets, including a 6-0, 6-0 shutout at the No. 4 slot by sophomore Tyler Baker over Sarah Vande Berg. Freshman Macy Vonderschmidt tallied a 6-1, 6-2 decision against Lindsey Buenger in the No. 5 position, making quick work of her opponent to earn her second triumph as a collegian.
Junior Lisa Grosselius also wasted little time in dispatching Anna Zoske at the No. 2 spot, handing her a 6-2, 6-1 setback to complete the Niners’ trio of wins.
Charlotte improves to 3-1 on its home courts with the victory, including back-to-back triumphs in its last two outings.
The 49ers will hit the road to Boone, N.C., to face Appalachian State at 2 p.m. Monday in their next match before returning home for a 2 p.m. Wednesday first serve against Mercer.
