|Charlotte looks to improve at second fall event|
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte women’s tennis team will return to the courts this weekend, in hopes of improving on its results from the season-opening Charlotte Invitational, when it travels to Winston-Salem, N.C., to compete in the Wake Forest Invitational. The three-day event will run Friday through Sunday with five 49ers slated to participate.
Charlotte began its fall tournament campaign by playing host to the home event last weekend, welcoming Campbell, East Carolina and UNC Greensboro to the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex for a round-robin format.
The young 49ers roster, which features healthy players in juniors Lisa Grosselius and Natsuko Takayanagi, sophomore Jessica Pérez and freshmen Briana Bodner and Macy Vonderschmidt, will look to rebound following the home tournament.
The Wake Forest Invitational, which features athletes from all over the Southeast, will include all five Charlotte players competing in singles and four pairing off into doubles tandems.
Takayanagi will compete in the A singles flight, opening with a 1:30 p.m. Friday contest against Bree Moniz-Soares of Davidson in the round of 16.
Grosselius is set for B singles action, meeting the host Demon Deacons’ Xue Zhang in the round of 16 at 2:30 p.m. Friday.
Vonderschmidt will participate in the C singles bracket, squaring off against Stetson’s Eveline Lepinay in the round of 16 at Noon Friday.
In the D singles flight, Pérez meets UNC Greensboro’s Amy Ellis at 1 p.m. Friday, also in the round of 16.
Finally, in the E singles bracket, Bodner will face Marin Kanii of Ball State in the round of 16 at 1 p.m. Friday.
In doubles, the duo of Grosselius and Vonderschmidt are in the A flight and are slated to play Stetson’s Diana Bukajeva and Isabella Fernandez at 9 a.m. Friday during the round of 16.
Also at 9 a.m. Friday, Pérez and Takayanagi will meet Campbell’s Ana Maria Ortiz and Ewa Telenga in the round of 16 of the B doubles bracket.
The Wake Forest Invitational is the second of four scheduled fall tournaments for the Niners, which also includes a trip to Chapel Hill, N.C., Oct. 17-21, for the ITA Carolina Regional and another home event, the 49er Invitational, Oct. 25-26, back at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex.
