|Niners announce 2013-14 women’s tennis schedule|
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte women’s tennis program and head coach Michaela Gorman have unveiled the 2013-14 schedule Tuesday, featuring two home fall tournaments and nine home spring dual matches for the return to Conference USA.
“We look forward to playing a very competitive home and away schedule in 2013-14,” Gorman said. “We will have the opportunity to play many teams that we have seen in the past in addition to being able to add some new Conference USA opponents to our schedule.”
One-half of the fall tournament slate will be played at the 49ers’ Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex, starting with the Charlotte Invitational Sept. 20-21. The following weekend, the Niners will stay in-state for the Wake Forest Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C., before making the trek to Chapel Hill, N.C., Oct. 17-21 for the ITA Carolina Regional.
Charlotte will conclude the fall campaign by playing host to the 49er Invitational, Oct. 25-26. Details on visiting teams for home tournaments will be released at a later date.
The 49ers then take three months off from competition before opening the spring dual calendar versus Radford Jan. 24 in Davidson, N.C. The next day the Niners stay on the road to battle Wake Forest.
Charlotte will make its 2014 home debut Feb. 1 against Mercer and then welcome Gardner-Webb to town Feb. 6 to begin a stretch in which five of eight matches will be played at home.
Over the remainder of February, the Niners will trade away and home dates. Home contests include Winthrop (Feb. 11), the Conference USA opener against FIU (Feb. 16) and USC Upstate (Feb. 28). While C-USA does not play a regular season in tennis, Charlotte has four league schools on the docket with three at home.
Four away matches kick-off March, including a trip to Birmingham to face conference foe UAB March 16. It is not until the end of the month when the 49ers are back on their home courts when they play host to Conference USA opponent Middle Tennessee, March 28. Two days later Coastal Carolina makes the trip to the Queen City.
April begins with a drive to UNC Greensboro before home matches with Davidson (April 4) and league foe East Carolina (April 12) finish the regular season.
The Conference USA Championships will feature all 16 league schools and it will be held April 16-20 in Norfolk, Va. The top four seeds of the single-elimination tournament format garner a double bye with the No. 5-8 seeds receiving a first-round bye. The winner of the championship title earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Five returners and four newcomers comprise the 2013-14 roster for Gorman, who is entering her 11th season in charge of the program as the school’s career leader in win percentage.
