|Niners look to return to courts Thursday afternoon|
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte women's tennis team aims to get back on the courts at 2:30 p.m. Thursday when it plays host to Elon at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex. The 49ers have endured inclement weather forcing the rescheduling of two matches since they last saw action Feb. 18.
In that last outing nearly 10 days ago, the Niners dropped a 4-3 decision to Appalachian State to put their record at 6-2. The contest was the beginning of what originally was scheduled as a five-match homestand but has since been shortened to three due to various postponements.
Despite all the uncontrolled setbacks, Charlotte is led by senior Anna Ekelund's 7-1 dual match mark in singles action. She is 11-7 overall, including the fall tournament campaign, to top the squad.
Classmate Iveta Guneva is right on Ekelund's heels in terms of the team's best record. She owns a 6-1 ledger in singles play with a 10-7 overall mark.
Ekelund also forms one-half of the Niners' top doubles pairing with sophomore Lisa Grosselius. The tandem is 7-1 in dual matches and 12-7 overall as the lone duo to reach double-figure victories.
The Phoenix enter Thursday's meeting with an 8-1 record, having won their last eight since dropping a spring-opening decision to No. 8 North Carolina.
While no member of the Elon roster has double-digit singles wins, Frida Jansaker and Bryn Khoury both have accumulated nine thus far. Jansaker and Jordan Johnston pace the squad with a 9-1 mark in doubles action.
In addition to Thursday's contest, Charlotte has also announced the rescheduled date for Wofford, a match it was supposed to play Tuesday but was postponed due to weather. The 49ers and Terriers will now meet at 2:30 p.m. March 19 at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex.
All matches at the Niners' on-campus facility are free and open to the public.
