|Back to tournament format for 49ers|
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte women's tennis team will return to the traditional fall tournament format this weekend, as it heads to Winston-Salem, N.C., for the Wake Forest Invitational. The three-day event begins Friday and will run through Sunday at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
"We've had some matches but now we head into our last three weekends of action, starting this weekend at Wake Forest," head coach Michaela Gorman said. "We want to be able to go out there and put some good points together."
The 49ers had stepped out of the regular fall format to play host to a pair of dual matches last Friday. Charlotte easily picked up 7-0 victories over local foes Belmont Abbey and Johnson C. Smith in the doubleheader action at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex.
Including the two dual matches, Anna Ekelund is off to a blistering start this year. She is 5-1 in singles, featuring a 3-1 ledger at the season-opening College of Charleston Invitational to finish third in her flight.
Jessica Pérez has opened her collegiate career with a solid 4-1 record. She finished the tournament in Charleston, S.C., with a 2-1 mark, while playing in a round robin bracket.
In doubles, the pairing of Ekelund and Lisa Grosselius has collected the most wins thus far with three. However, Pérez is a member of two duos, with Emmanuelle Briant and Iveta Guneva, which have tallied 2-0 marks this fall.
In addition to the 49ers and host Demon Deacons, other schools participating in the event include Appalachian State, Campbell, College of Charleston, Davidson, Elon, ETSU, Louisville, Navy, Radford, Richmond, Stetson, UNC Greensboro, West Virginia and Winthrop.
