CHARLESTON, S.C. - Senior Anna Ekelund won both of her matches Friday to lead the Charlotte women's tennis team during opening day play at the College of Charleston Invitational in Charleston, S.C. Nine of the 10 members of the squad are competing at the three-day event this weekend.

Ekelund put herself into Saturday's semifinal round with a pair of victories in the A2 singles flight. She opened the day with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Coastal Carolina's Shelby Bates in the Round of 16 before knocking off Samford's Lauren Caballero in a come-from-behind 2-6, 6-1, 10-7 quarterfinal decision. Ekelund will face Stetson's Diana Bukajeva in the semifinals of the bracket at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Classmate Ginny Johnson and freshman Tyler Baker were the only other Charlotte players to register a win Friday. Johnson handed Coastal Carolina's Nicole Boyle a 6-3, 6-2 setback in the B2 quarterfinals. She will meet Grace Baker of host College of Charleston at 2 p.m. Saturday in semifinal action.

Baker, competing in her first collegiate tournament, bounced back from an opening A2 Round of 16 defeat to rally for a 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 triumph against College of Charleston's Irene Viana in the consolation quarterfinals. Baker will next face Nisha Crouser of Davidson in the consolation semifinals at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
