|Women's Tennis Draws Eight Seed for A-10 Tournament|
Charlotte has been seeded eighth for the 28th annual Atlantic 10 Conference Women's Tennis Championships, taking place Apr. 8-10 at the Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va. Seven-time champion Richmond is the top seed. Charlotte will face ninth-seeded Dayton Friday morning at 8 a.m.
The winner of that match will take on Richmond at 3:30 p.m. Friday.
Last season, as the nine seed, Charlotte won its opening match, then knocked off top-seeded Xavier to advance to the championship semi-finals. The 49ers finished third last season at the championships. Charlotte has finished second and fifth, with three third-place finishes in five previous years of A-10 membership.
Sophomore Anna Ekelund leads Charlotte with 19 singles wins, followed by 18 wins from fellow sophomore Iveta Guneva. Junior Andrea Rivera leads the team with 14 wins in spring matches only. For the 49ers to find success, the doubles point may be important. Rivera and sophomore Alexandra Zinn are 17-9 paired together at the top doubles tandem in the lineup, while Ekelund and senior Gabi Vergara have doubles win in each of the three spots in the doubles lineup this season.
The remaining seeds for the Championship are Temple (second), Saint Louis (third), George Washington (fourth), Xavier (fifth), Duquesne (sixth), Massachusetts (seventh), Fordham (10th), Saint Joseph's (11th), St. Bonaventure (12th), Rhode Island (13th) and La Salle (14th).
Competition begins on Friday, April 8, at 8:00am, with the final match of the day set to start at 6:00pm. On Saturday, April 9, play begins at 8:00am with the final match slated for 3:30pm.
