Double-digit wins reached in regular-season finale
DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Charlotte 49ers women’s tennis team closed the regular season and attained double-digit victories for the eighth time in the last 10 years following a 4-3 road triumph at cross-county rival Davidson Friday afternoon. The Niners have won four of their last six to end their final campaign as a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference.

“This was a great team win to carry into the conference tournament next week,” head coach Michaela Gorman said.

Charlotte (10-6) started by picking up the early 1-0 lead behind a pair of doubles victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. The top tandem of Anna Ekelund and Lisa Grosselius handed the Wildcats’ Elaina Cummer and Brites Moniz-Soares an 8-1 setback, while the No. 3 duo of Jessica Pérez and Alexandra Zinn topped Elise Held and Catherine Wood, 8-3.

The 49ers then split the six singles matches, although Davidson (9-10) forced three three-set decisions with two falling into the Niners’ favor.

Charlotte’s lone straight-set win was at the No. 5 slot, as Ekelund defeated Tamara Hill 6-1, 6-0.

After dropping her first set, Natsuko Takayanagi rallied to knock off Cummer at the No. 2 position 6-7, 6-1, 7-6.

Grosselius was in a three-set affair with Stephani Synn during the No. 3 meeting but prevailed 7-5, 5-7, 7-6 in the tightest match of the contest.

The 49ers will next compete in the Atlantic 10 Championships, April 18-21, at The Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va. Charlotte will learn of its seed for the upcoming single-elimination tournament at a later date.
