Final homestand begins against cross-county foe

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A three-match home set will mark the conclusion of the 2014 regular season for the Charlotte women's tennis team. The 49ers will start the trio of contests at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex with a 3 p.m. Friday meeting against Davidson.

Charlotte has picked up all of its dual-match victories this spring at the on-campus facility, posting a 5-1 record on its home courts. The Niners have won their last four on the familiar surface entering Friday's cross-county matchup.

"We're looking forward to another battle with a tough SoCon team," head coach Michaela Gorman said.

The 49ers are 5-11 overall after dropping a road decision at UNC Greensboro Wednesday.

Junior Natsuko Takayanagi picked up the lone point, moving her into a share of the team lead with eight overall singles victories in 2013-14 with classmate Lisa Grosselius.

The pair trails freshman Macy Vonderschmidt, the March 25 Conference USA Athlete of the Week, for wins in just dual matches.

Davidson is 6-14 on the campaign after suffering a 5-2 setback to Appalachian State in its last outing. The Wildcats have lost their last five, all against Southern Conference opponents.

Brites Moniz-Soares paces the squad with 10 singles triumphs, all at the top position.

Davidson owns a 32-15 all-time series lead, though Charlotte has won the last three and four of the most recent five matches between the two schools. Gorman is 6-4 against the Wildcats during her tenure with the Niners’ program.

Friday's match, and all contests at Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex, features free admission.
