Homestand opens with 49ers victory Saturday
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte women’s tennis team utilized the 70-degree temperatures Saturday and used them to their advantage, handing Western Carolina a 4-3 setback at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex in the first of three straight on its home courts.

The 49ers grabbed their fourth-in-a-row at home by winning the doubles point and then earning a split in singles action to pick up the narrow win against their in-state opponent.

Charlotte (5-9) used a tiebreaker to help clinch the early 1-0 lead following doubles action. Freshman Briana Bodner and junior Lisa Grosselius opened the trio of matches with an 8-4 triumph over the Catamounts’ Erin Maguire and Sara Ruiz Pajares in the No. 3 slot.

The other two contests featured closer results, with the Niners’ No. 2 tandem of sophomore Jessica Pérez and freshman Macy Vonderschmidt narrowly defeating Megan McLinden and Nicole Nielly 8-7 (6) to push the point in Charlotte’s favor.

Western Carolina (1-11-1) was leading 7-6 in the No. 1 battle, which was declared unfinished after the Niners locked up the edge entering singles.

Charlotte then added singles wins, all in straight sets, to pull out the victory and snap a three-match losing skid.

Grosselius handed Shannon Bettiol a 6-2, 6-0 loss at the No. 2 position, while junior Natsuko Takayanagi posted a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over McLinden in the No. 3 spot.

Vonderschmidt closed the 49ers’ scoring with her sixth consecutive win, recording a 6-2, 6-2 victory versus Ruiz Pajares at the No. 4 slot.

Charlotte will look to keep the momentum on its side when it plays host to Middle Tennessee at Noon Friday in the first home Conference USA match of the spring.
