|Freshman pushes win streak to four|
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Freshman Macy Vonderschmidt continued her solid play lately for the Charlotte women’s tennis team, extending her singles win streak to four, but it was not enough as the 49ers fell to UAB Saturday afternoon, 6-1. It marked the first Conference USA regular-season match of the spring campaign for the Niners.
Vonderschmidt rallied after dropping her first set to hold off the Blazers’ Catherine Ragon in their No. 5 position meeting 3-6, 7-5, 10-4. Her four-straight victories are the longest run for any Charlotte (4-8, 0-1 C-USA) player this season.
Despite the team setback, a number of 49ers’ individuals went the distance against their UAB (6-8, 1-3 C-USA) adversaries to make a closer result than the final score may indicate.
Each of the top three singles slots, manned by freshman Victoria Pahlett, junior Lisa Grosselius and junior Natsuko Takayanagi, respectively, saw three-set decisions. Takayanagi was the closest in her final set, dropping a 10-8 tiebreaking heartbreaker to Pardis Kianoush in the No. 3 spot.
The Blazers won the doubles point early, though the Niners’ No. 2 pairing of Pahlett and Takayanagi led 6-3 in its match against Paula Castro and Kianoush when it was declared unfinished.
Charlotte will look to regroup when it returns to the courts at 2 p.m. Friday in Buies Creek, N.C., against Campbell.
