CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte women’s tennis team returns to its on-campus facility, the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex, for a 2 p.m. Friday match against USC Upstate. The 49ers and Spartans are slated to meet for the third-straight season.

“We’re looking forward to another home match Friday,” head coach Michaela Gorman said. “We had a great battle with them last year and are looking forward to another one tomorrow.”

Charlotte brings a 2-5 record into the contest after falling on the road to Elon Wednesday in its most recent match. The Niners, however, earned a 7-0 sweep over Belmont Abbey last Friday the last time they played at home.

Junior Natsuko Takayanagi’s three singles wins in dual matches pace the squad, while all seven players who have competed in singles have earned at least one triumph. Sophomore Tyler Baker and junior Lisa Grosselius have posted two victories each.

Six different doubles combinations have played together in the spring with four tandems registering a win apiece.

USC Upstate owns a 1-9 mark after dropping a 4-3 decision to Gardner-Webb Tuesday in its last match, its fourth-straight setback after opening February with its lone triumph of the campaign.

Isabel von Stryk paces the Spartans with five singles wins, while 10 unique doubles duos have taken to the courts as head coach Dr. Oliver Trittenwein seeks chemistry among his troops.

Last year, USC Upstate claimed a 5-2 win in Spartanburg, S.C., to inch ahead 2-1 in the all-time series. Charlotte’s lone victory came in 2012 when it captured a 6-1 triumph in the Queen City.
