Charlotte dominates in sweep over Belmont Abbey
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte women’s tennis surrendered just five total games combined between singles and doubles play, including picking up four sweeps in singles action, to hand Belmont Abbey a 7-0 setback Thursday afternoon at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex. The win was the first shutout of the spring campaign for the 49ers.

Charlotte (2-4) opened with just one game lost to its nearby opponent, tallying victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions to clinch the point and a 1-0 lead. The freshmen tandem of Briana Bodner and Macy Vonderschmidt collected an 8-0 sweep against the Crusaders’ sister duo of Elizabeth and Rachael Leonards in the No. 3 meeting.

The point then fell to the Niners when sophomore Jessica Pérez and junior Natsuko Takayanagi handed Bridget Franer and Brooke Ingram an 8-1 loss in the No. 2 contest.

Charlotte’s domination continued in singles play, as Belmont Abbey (0-6) was only able to post five game wins in the six matches.

The 49ers earned 6-0, 6-0 sweeps at the No. 2, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 slots, which included the first collegiate singles triumphs for Bodner and Vonderschmidt. Bodner knocked off Elizabeth Leonards in the No. 6 match, while Vonderschmidt tallied her decision against Brigid Donohoue in the No. 4 tilt.

Takayanagi and Pérez continued the solid play with wins over Ingram and Rachael Leonards at the No. 2 and No. 5 positions, respectively.

Sophomore Tyler Baker dropped just one game in her No. 3 matchup with Franer but prevailed 6-0, 6-1, while junior Lisa Grosselius earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Katharine Miller in the No. 1 meeting.

Charlotte will return to action at 2 p.m. Wednesday when it travels to Elon, N.C., to face Elon. The Phoenix will square off against Radford Saturday in their only match prior to welcoming the 49ers to town for the mid-week matchup.
