Niners stop Runniní Bulldogs for first victory
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte women’s tennis team earned the doubles point and split the six singles matches on its way to picking up a 4-3 triumph over Gardner-Webb in the home opener Thursday afternoon at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex.

All three doubles matches were decided by identical scores but the 49ers grabbed two of the trio to secure an early lead for the first time this spring. Charlotte (1-2) garnered its victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions.

During the No. 2 doubles match, Tyler Baker and Natsuko Takayanagi knocked off Jenny Lunde and Tedodora Stanciu, 8-4. The Niners’ No. 3 pairing of Jessica Pérez and Macy Vonderschmidt followed suit, handing Mary Walker Mixon and Catherine White a similar 8-4 setback.

With the 1-0 lead in their back pocket, the 49ers were able to collect the over match win despite a singles split with Gardner-Webb (2-1).

Victoria Pahlett, who joined the Charlotte program at the beginning of the semester and competed in just her third collegiate match, picked up her first career victory with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph over the Runnin’ Bulldogs Yasmin Doost in the No. 1 slot.

Lisa Grosselius made quick work of Lunde in the No. 2 contest, dispatching her opponent by a 6-0, 6-1 score, while Takayanagi added the third 49ers’ singles win with a 6-4, 6-4 decision against Ronia Hutterli in the No. 3 position.

Pérez forced three sets during her No. 6 match with White, but after winning the first set, the Charlotte sophomore could not maintain her momentum.

The 49ers hit the road for the third time in the season’s first four matches Saturday, when they travel to Greenville, S.C., to face Furman in a Noon first serve.
