CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte women's tennis team put
forth another solid effort in its second match of the day, handing Johnson C.
Smith a 7-0 setback Friday afternoon to conclude the 49ers' start of dual action
in the 2012-13 campaign.
The 49ers, who opened the day by blanking Belmont Abbey at the Halton-Wagner
Tennis Complex, matched the score in their next go-around including not
dropping a game in the three doubles contests. The play began with Anna Ekelund
and Lisa Grosselius handing the Golden Bulls' Rankin Anderson and Khadijha
Battle an 8-0 shutout at the top slot, while Emmanuelle Briant and Ginny Johnson
tallied an 8-0 blanking over Samantha Barnes and Margaret Jones at the No. 2
position.
The complete sweep was concluded with an 8-0 Iveta Guneva and Jessica Pérez
triumph against Felicia Akande and Nichelle Heard at the No. 3 spot.
Singles play went quickly as well, as Charlotte (2-0) picked up straight-set wins
at each slot. Ekelund defeated Anderson 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 1 position, while Pérez
posted an identical margin of victory in her No. 6 meeting with Jasmine
Riddick.
Grosselius notched a 6-1, 6-1 triumph versus Akande at the No. 2 slot and
Briant registered a victory against Battle 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 3 contest.
Guneva then earned a 6-0, 6-2 win over Heard in the No. 4 match, while Johnson dropped
three games against Johnson C. Smith's (0-1) Barnes a 6-1, 6-2 loss at the No.
5 position.
The 49ers will get back into their regular fall tournament rhythm with a trip
to Winston-Salem, N.C., next Friday-Sunday, October 5-7, for the Wake Forest
