MASON, OH – The third-seed Charlotte 49ers (14-9) defeated sixth-seed Temple, 4-0, in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 Men’s Tennis Championship.
“This was a good team win,” Charlotte coach Billy Boykin said. “Everyone contributed today and we had solid efforts throughout the lineup. We’re looking forward to the match tomorrow and know that we’ll need to be at our best.”
Charlotte captured the doubles point with victories at number one and three doubles. At number one doubles, Charlotte’s Jack Williams and Jordi Massalle Ferrer did not drop a game in an 8-0 win over Temple’s Hicham Berkssir and Hernan Vasconez. The victory was the pair’s 13th of the season. At number three doubles, Charlotte’s Kamil Khalil and Krzysztof Kwasniewicz defeated Temple’s Nicholas Paulus and Santiago Canete, 8-2 , for their 13th win of the season. At number two doubles, Charlotte’s Alex Calott and Paul Cisti trailed Temple’s Kristian Marquat and Sam Rundle, 7-4, when the match was stopped since the 49ers had already clinched the doubles point.
Charlotte won three singles matches to claim the overall victory. At number one singles, Charlotte’s Williams recorded his 18th win of the season with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Temple’s Vasconez. At number four singles, Charlotte’s Calott won his 18th match of the season with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Temple’s Paulus. At number five singles, Charlotte’s Cisti won his 20th match of the season with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Temple’s Belkssir. The other three singles matches were not finished since the 49ers had already clinched the victory. At number two singles, Charlotte’s Massalle Ferrer was leading Temple’s Marquat, 6-4, 1-1. At number three singles, Charlotte’s Khalil was leading Temple’s Canete, 6-2, 4-4. At number six singles, Charlotte’s Kwasniewicz’s match with Temple’s Rundle was tied at one set apiece, 2-6, 6-1, when the match was stopped.
Charlotte plays second-seed George Washington in the A-10 Tournament semifinals, Saturday, April 27 at 1 pm.
