RICHMOND, VA – Behind singles and doubles wins by Kamil Khalil, Paul Cisti and Krzysztof Kwasniewicz, the Charlotte 49ers (11-7) defeated Atlantic 10 foe Richmond (10-10), 4-3, on the road. Khalil clinched the 49ers victory with a dramatic three set win at number three singles.

“Coming into this match we knew that it would take a good team effort,” said Charlotte coach Billy Boykin, who was Richmond’s head coach from 2008-10. “Richmond has a talented lineup featuring three very experienced seniors. We worked all week in preparation for this match, and though we didn’t play our best tennis, we competed very hard. Our doubles play continues to improve. We’ll turn our focus now to George Washington next Friday.”

The 49ers won all three doubles matches to claim the doubles points. At number one doubles, Charlotte’s Jordi Massalle Ferrer and Jack Williams defeated Richmond’s Ethan Dunbar and Sebastien Fauchet, 8-6. At number two doubles, Charlotte’s Alex Calott and Paul Cisti defeated Richmond’s Jesse Feder and Paul Nahon, 8-4. At number three doubles, Charlotte’s Khalil and Kwasniewicz defeated Richmond’s Justin Baker and Dylan Trent, 8-1.

The two teams split their six singles matches but since the 49ers captured the doubles point, Charlotte won the match. At number one singles, Charlotte’s Massalle Ferrer lost to Richmond’s Dunbar in three hard fought sets, 6-7, 6-2, 7-5. At number two singles, Charlotte’s Williams lost to Richmond’s Feder, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. At number three singles, Charlotte’s Khalil defeated Richmond’s Fauchet in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, to give the 49ers the overall victory. At number four singles, Charlotte’s Calott lost to Richmond’s Nahon, 7-6, 7-5. At number five singles, Charlotte’s Cisti defeated Richmond’s Trent, 6-4, 6-0. At number six singles, Charlotte’s Kwasniewicz defeated Richmond’s Baker, 6-4, 6-0.
