|MTEN Ends Regular Season in 4-2 Loss at Radford|
The Charlotte 49ers men's tennis program faced its fourth nationally-ranked opponent and after weather delays, moved indoors to a 4-2 loss at No. 73 Radford Wednesday afternoon at the RU Tennis Courts. Charlotte slips to 14-7 on the season, with the Highlanders improving to 14-4. The match was the last in the regular season for the 49ers.
The 49ers got one doubles win, with the number-three pair of Kamil Khalil (Moscow, Russia) and Krzysztof Kwasniewicz (Wroclaw, Poland) taking an 8-6 victory as the Highlanders claimed the doubles point. The duo finishes the regular season on a four-match winning streak, tying for the team lead with eight doubles wins.
Khalil had his 13-match win streak halted when he moved up to number one to take on Nick Sayer, who is ranked No. 78 in college tennis. Sayer took a 6-3, 6-0 win. Khalil is 13-2 in singles play this season, with both of his losses coming against opponents from nationally-ranked teams.
The 49ers scored their points off of freshmen. Alex Calott (Charlotte, N.C. / Ardrey Kell HS) took a win at number-three with a 6-4, 7-5 decision to take his team-leading 18th win of the season. He is among three 49ers with 12 singles wins in dual matches.
Nate Shanok (Boca Raton, Fla. / Spanish River HS) won at number six, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 for his 17th singles win of the year. His 13 singles wins in dual matches are tied for the most on the team this spring.
Charlotte will now wait for seeding for next weekend's Atlantic 10 Conference Championships, to take place at the Lindner Family Center in Mason, Ohio starting Friday, April 13. The 49ers finished 4-0 in league matches this season. The 14 wins are the most in a regular season since winning 17 in 2007, when Charlotte claimed its first and only conference title and NCAA Tournament appearance.
