Charlotte freshman Jack Williams (Alpharetta, Ga. / Alpharetta HS) was today named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men's Tennis Rookie of the Week.
Charlotte's top singles player, Williams had a 3-0 week playing at the number-one spot for Charlotte, with straight-sets wins in all matches, all taking place away from home. Tuesday, the 49ers toppled Presbyterian on the road before winning a pair of neutral-site Atlantic 10 Conference matches, against St. Bonaventure and Saint Joseph's.
Williams is tied for the team lead with 13 singles victories this season, with a team-best 9-4 record in dual matches. Three of his four dual match losses came on the road at ranked opponents. He and freshman doubles partner Alex Calott also picked up an A-10 win Sunday over Saint Joseph's. They lead Charlotte with six doubles victories as a pair this season.
"I am happy for Jack, said Charlotte head coach Billy Boykin. "He's been working hard and playing great tennis for us this spring. He is adjusting very well to the speed of the college game and I am certain that his best tennis is still ahead of him."
This is the first weekly A-10 honor for any member of the men's tennis team this season.
Charlotte is 10-3 this season, winners of six of the last seven matches. All three season losses for the men's team were on the road at nationally-ranked opponents. The 49ers host East Carolina Thursday at noon at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex before heading to Charleston for a pair of weekend matches. Charlotte takes on The Citadel at noon Saturday before an 11 a.m. match at College of Charleston Sunday.
