Charlotte men's tennis got a singles win from senior Michael Anders and a win from the top doubles pair of senior Moritz Bernhoerster and junior Charles Martin-Lecamp, but Gardner-Webb outlasted the 49ers 6-1 as four different singles matches played to at least a set tiebreaker Thursday at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex. The match concludes the 2011 regular season for Charlotte, with a 5-15 record. Gardner-Webb improved to 10-9 on the year.
"We fought hard out there today, but came up short," said Niners head coach Billy Boykin. "Gardner-Webb is a tough-nosed team and they played well at the right times. Next up for us is the Atlantic 10 Conference Championships and we are looking forward to the challenge of playing our best tennis during the tournament."
Anders won in a third-set tiebreaker 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (4) to win at number-two singles. The win was his 11th of the season, putting him in a tie for second on the squad in singles victories. It was his fourth win of the season playing in the second spot in the lineup.
Before singles play began, Bernhoerster and Martin-Lecamp won their team-best 11th doubles match of the season together, 8-3. They are 4-4 together at number one this spring.
Charlotte will await seeding for next weekend's Atlantic 10 Championships, which take place in Saint Louis.
