Asheville, NC – The nationally-ranked Charlotte 49ers (9-3) won four singles matches to rally for a 4-3 road win at UNC Asheville (6-8) for their fourth straight win. The 49ers are ranked 75th in this week’s Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national rankings.
UNC Asheville won two of the three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. At number one doubles, Charlotte’s Jack Williams and Alex Calott lost to UNC Asheville’s Alex Croker and Brett Landau, 8-6. At number two doubles, Charlotte’s Kamil Khalil and Jordi Massalle Ferrer improved to 10-1 on the season with an 8-3 win over UNC Asheville’s Daniel Kripak and Josh Swindler. At number three doubles, Charlotte’s Forrest Edwards and Paul Cisti lost to UNC Asheville’s Thomas Panoulas and Will Goldberg.
Charlotte won four of the six singles matches to claim the overall victory. At number one singles, Charlotte’s Edwards saw his seven-match winning streak end with a 7-5, 7-6 loss to UNC Asheville’s Kripak. At number two singles, Charlotte’s Khalil lost to UNC Asheville’s Panoulas, 6-4, 6-4. At number three singles, Charlotte’s Massalle Ferrer won his ninth straight match to improve to 19-5 on the season with a 6-3, 6-2 win over UNC Asheville’s Croker. At number four singles, Charlotte’s Williams won his 12th match of the season with a hard fought three sets win, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6), over UNC Asheville’s Landau. At number five singles, Charlotte’s Calott improved to 18-10 on the season with his fourth straight win with a 6-2, 6-7 (7-9), 6-4 victory over UNC Asheville’s Swindler. At number six singles, Charlotte’s Cisti won his fourth straight match and his 13th win of the season with a 6-3, 6-2 win over UNC Asheville’s Goldberg.
Charlotte returns home to play Lenoir-Rhyne at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex, Sunday, March 23 at 12 pm.
