49ers Play Winthrop & George Washington This Week

Charlotte, NC - The streaking Charlotte 49ers (5-1), who have won five straight matches, will travel to Rock Hill, South Carolina to take on Winthrop (3-4), Wednesday, February 26 at 2:30 pm and later this week the 49ers will host former conference foe George Washington (2-5) at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex, Friday, February 28 at Noon. The 49ers entered the ITA National Rankings this week at number 70.

"We're excited to get back out on the courts this week,” Charlotte coach Billy Boykin said.  “Both Winthrop and George Washington are good teams and we'll have to be at our best in both matches."

The 49ers men’s tennis program is 5-0 at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex. Forrest Edwards leads the team in singles victories with 17 wins followed by Alex Calott and Jordi Massalle Ferrer with 14 wins apiece. In doubles, the duo of Kamil Khalil and Massalle Ferrer, who are ranked 31st in the ITA National Doubles rankings, is leading the program this season with six doubles wins. Jack Williams and Edwards have also won six doubles matches this season.

The 49ers hold a 14-11 series lead over Winthrop.  Charlotte lost to Winthrop, 7-0, at home in their last meeting, March 23, 2013. The 49ers will try to even their all-time series record against George Washington, who leads 6-5. The last time the 49ers faced the Colonials was on April 27, 2013, when the 49ers suffered a 4-0 loss in the A-10 Tournament Semifinals.
