Charlotte, N.C. – Charlotte (5-1) defeated South Carolina State (1-4), 6-1, to improve to 5-0 at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex.
"South Carolina State is a tough team,” Charlotte coach Billy Boykin said. “We had to play really hard to win this match. We didn't play as sharp as I know we're capable of playing, but I thought we showed toughness and resiliency when we needed it most."
Charlotte won two of three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. At number one doubles, Charlotte’s Jack Williams and Alex Calott lost to South Carolina State’s Martin Kobza and Jiri Stiburek, 8-4. At number two doubles, Charlotte held off a match point to force a tie breaker. Charlotte’s Kamil Khalil, who smashed a service winner on match point, and Jordi Massalle Ferrer defeated South Carolina State’s Daniel Vala and Martin Figura, 8-7, to clinch the doubles point. At number three doubles, Charlotte’s Forrest Edwards and Paul Cisti defeated South Carolina State’s Stanislav Baco and Soufiane Mouline, 8-6.
Charlotte won five of the six singles matches to clinch their fifth straight win. At number one singles, Charlotte’s Edwards defeated South Carolina State’s Stiburek, 6-2, 6-0, for his 17th win of the season. At number two singles, Charlotte’s Jack Williams lost to South Carolina State’s Kobza in three hard fought sets, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. At number three singles, Charlotte’s Khalil won his fourth straight match with a 6-3, 6-2 win over South Carolina State’s Vala. At number four singles, Charlotte’s Massalle Ferrer found himself down a set and a break in the second set before winning 11 of the next 15 games to record a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over South Carolina State’s Baco. At number five singles, Charlotte’s Calott played two flawless tie breakers to defeat South Carolina State’s Mouline, 7-6, 7-6, to clinch the victory for the 49ers. At number six singles, Charlotte’s Cisti battled back from a set down to defeat South Carolina State’s Figura, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
