Three matches await this week for the Charlotte 49ers men’s tennis program at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex. The 49ers play Belmont-Abbey on Thursday, February 20th at 2:30 pm, then Charlotte plays The Citadel on Saturday, February 22 at 8:30 am. The 49ers conclude the weekend against South Carolina State on Sunday, February 23rd at 1 pm.
"After about a week or so of inclement weather, it'll be nice to get back out on the courts for some competition,” Charlotte coach Billy Boykin said. “We've seen an uptick in the temperature this week and even a little sunshine, so that's been great for our practices. We're scheduled to compete in five matches over the next ten days, so we'll need to be prepared both mentally and physically for this upcoming stretch of match play. Fortunately, we begin the five-match swing with three home contests here at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex."
The 49ers (2-1) have not seen any action since Sunday, Feb 9th when they topped Conference USA foe, UAB, 5-0 at home due to inclement weather. Forrest Edwards leads the team with 14 singles wins, followed by Alex Calott and Jordi Massalle Ferrer with 11 wins a piece. In doubles play, Edwards and Jack Williams lead the team with six wins this season.
The last time the 49ers faced Belmont Abbey was during the 2012-13 season at home when Charlotte blanked the Crusaders, 7-0, September 28, 2012. The last time Charlotte faced The Citadel was March 10, 2012 when Charlotte topped the Bulldogs, 4-3, on the road. Charlotte defeated South Carolina State, 7-0, at home in their last meeting March 20, 1999.
All matches at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex are free admission.
