Charlotte 49ers men's tennis players sophomore Alex Calott and freshman Jordi Massalle Ferrer earned Atlantic 10 weekly honors. Calott was named Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Week. While, Massalle Ferrer was named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week.
Calott is the second Niner to earn A-10 Player of the Week honors this season after Paul Cisti claimed the honor on February 12th . Calott is the seventh different Niner to earn Atlantic 10 Player of the Week honors.
Calott earned Atlantic 10 Player of the Week honors after going 3-0 in singles and doubles in Charlotte's wins over Catawba, Wingate and Texas Pan-American last week. The sophomore won each of his singles matches last week in straight sets, defeating Catawaba's Mitchell McDonald (6-1, 7-6), Wingate's Roberto Hennis (6-4, 6-2) and Texas Pan American's Alejandro Sanjoja (6-1, 6-0). Calott teamed up with Cisti for three doubles wins from the number one and two spots, leading the 49ers to six team wins out of their last seven matches.
Massalle Ferrer became the fifth different Niner to claim Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors and the first since Kamil Khalil was named A-10 Rookie of the Week, March 12, 2012.
Massalle Ferrer has won nine consecutive singles matches, including three last week in straight sets. The rookie posted wins over Catawba's Jess Goodall (6-0, 6-1), Wingate's Sebastian Hall (6-4, 6-0) and Texas Pan American's Ricardo Hopker (6-2, 6-3) to improve to 21-5 overall. He and partner Jack Williams extended their doubles streak to eight, adding two last week from the number one and two spots over Catawba and Texas Pan American.
Calott and Massalle Ferrer and the rest of the 49ers return to action on the road at #25 VCU, Friday, March 22 at 2 pm.
