Charlotte senior golfer Franco Castro (Alpharetta, Ga. / LSU) posted an even-par 70 to tie for ninth after the first round of the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate of a 36-hole Monday at the Par-70 Old Overton Country Club. The 49ers were 15-over (295) in a three-way tie for seventh after the first of two rounds on Monday. Alabama leads overall at six-under (274) with UAB’s Wilson McDonald the individual leader with an opening-round five-under 65.

Castro recorded three birdies and three bogeys on the 7,204-yard layout, as the Niners were in the first groups off the tee this morning. All three birdies came on par-four holes for the senior and stroke leader this season.

Freshman Thomas Rowland (Consett, England / St. Bedes Catholic School and Sixth Form College) carded a one-over 71 in his opening round to finish second for Charlotte. He had two bogeys and a birdie to go with 15 pars on his scorecard to sit in a tie for 15th individually in the 60-golfer field.

The 49ers are already on the course for the second round of the day heading into Tuesday’s final round in Alabama.
