|Golf's 1st U.S. Tournament in S.C. Starting Sunday|
Charlotte golf heads to the sixth-annual Rees Jones Invitational for its first tournament in American soil starting Sunday, September 22, running through Tuesday the 24th. The tournament takes place at Haig Point Club in Daufuskie Island, S.C.
The 54-hole tournament, which has traditionally been a two-day event, will run Sunday through Tuesday on the par-72, 7,380-yard Rees Jones Signature Course. The course will prove to be a huge challenge for the teams once again, as the Rees Jones Signature Course is one of the most difficult golf courses the golfers will see all year. It has consistently made Golf Digest's list of America's 100 Greatest Courses and Golf Magazine's Top 100 in the World list.
Liberty returns to defend its title. Kennesaw State, a two-time champion, is also back and will be joined by host South Carolina, Charleston Southern, Georgia State, South Florida, Troy, UNC Wilmington, Winthrop and fellow C-USA members East Carolina and Middle Tennessee.
Charlotte finished fourth in the event last season. Returning to the field this season after playing in it for the first time last year are senior Franco Castro (Alpharetta, Ga. / LSU), junior Raoul Menard (Ange-Gardier, Quebec City / Beaulieu), sophomore Dan Hendry (Dubai, United Arab Emirates / Dubai College) and sophomore Daniel Brantley (Asheboro, N.C.). Freshman Seth Gandy (Huntersville, N.C. / Hough HS) will make his first appearance in this event, as will sophomore Thomas Rowland (Consett, England / St. Bedes Catholic School and Sixth Form College), who will be competing as an individual.
Hendry, Brantley and Castro all finished tied for 23rd with a total of 229 (+13) for the three-round event. Menard was two strokes back of that threesome. As a junior last season Joe Toland (Lebanon, N.H. / Hartford HS) was the top 49er finisher, at 228 (+12) in a tie for 18th.
The tournament will get underway on Sunday with teams teeing off at 8:30 a.m. off the first and 10th tees. Charlotte will be part of the last groups off of 10 starting at 9:40 a.m. The 49ers will be paired with Charleston Southern and East Carolina. Live scoring will be available all three days at golfstatresults.com.
