|Gandy Has Best 49ers Round to Finish Japan Trip|
Charlotte freshman Seth Gandy (Huntersville, N.C. / Hough HS) produced the 49ers best round on Thursday in the final action of the Topy Cup, and international competition in Tanagura, Japan. The 49ers finished sixth of 10 teams at 15-over (276-289-290 – 855) in the three-round event at the par-70, 6,964-yard Tanagura Country Club.
Gandy finished with a birdie and a bogey in each half of his round for and even-par 70. He finished the week at four-over (72-72-70 – 214) and a tie for 23rd of the 54-player event.
Charlotte’s top overall performer for the tournament was senior Franco Castro (Alpharetta, Ga. / LSU) and his two-under (66-68-74 – 208) result. He was just one of just 14 players to finish under par, despite his four-over 74 final round. He was tied for 10th to open his final collegiate campaign.
"Seth had a pretty solid final round with 2 birdies and 2 bogeys,” said Charlotte head coach Ryan Cabbage. “Franco got off to a slow start today and just never could quite get anything going. I wish we could have played better in such a wonderful event and experience for our kids here in Japan.”
Sophomores Dan Hendry (Dubai, United Arab Emirates / Dubai College) and Daniel Brantley (Asheboro, N.C.) both shot three-over 73 in their final rounds to end in a tie for 32nd. Hendry (71-75-73 – 219) and Brantley (70-76-76 – 219) were nine-over par for the week.
Sophomore Thomas Rowland (Consett, England / St. Bedes Catholic School and Sixth Form College) slipped to a tie for 34th at 10-over (69-74-77 – 220) after a seven-over final round Thursday.
“We have some work to do before we go to Daufuskie Island in ten days but we will get back home, work hard and be ready to play,” said Cabbage.
The 49ers compete next Sept. 22-24 at the Rees Jones Collegiate at Daufuskie Island, S.C. The 49ers finished fourth out of 12 teams in the event last season.
