|Charlotte Heads to UAB for C-USA Series|
Charlotte, N.C.- The Niners Softball team is looking to snap out of a ten game funk as Charlotte heads down to Birmingham, Ala. to face UAB in a three game Conference USA series. Charlotte sits with a 16-22 overall record and a 7-10 clip in conference play. The Blazers have been on a surge climbing to a 27-19 record and 11-6 mark in league play.
Charlotte (16-22) has lost seven of the last 10 but has picked up five wins in the last eight C-USA games. The Niners are looking for some help this weekend sitting in the tenth spot in the standings with six C-USA games to go. The Blazers are sitting in third place with nine conference games remaining.
Charlotte's recent success against the Blazers has fared well for the Niners winning the last two meetings. Unfortunately for the Niners those wins were during the 2005 season when Charlotte was in the Conference USA last.
Lexi Betancourt (Garner, N.C./ West Johnson HS) should be well rested after pitching in all three games last weekend. Betancourt got the week off from action resting up for Conference USA play against the Blazers. The redshirt sophomore comes into the meeting with a 15-11 record in the circle and a 2.29 ERA with 160 strikeouts. UAB's ace Leigh Streetman shows a similar record at 17-11 posting 178 strikeouts.
Jackie Kleinsmith (Santa Maria, Calif./ Righetti HS) took over the top spot hitting .342 after picking up three hits in the doubleheader loss during the week. Kleinsmith leads the team with 41 hits.
Samantha Slade (Apex, N.C./ Apex HS) and Natalie Capone (St. Charles, Ill./ St. Charles North) is tied for second with 38 hits apiece. Slade has slipped to a .328 average leading the team with eight doubles and sent seven over the fence. At the lead-off spot, Capone is hitting .302 with two doubles and a team leading four triples.
Jessica Plemmons (Lexington, N.C./ North Davidson HS) rounds out the top four in the line-up hitting .316 with four doubles and eight home runs. Plemmons leads the team with 32 RBI.
First pitch of the three-game series at the UAB Softball Field is slated for 5 pm on Friday afternoon with game two following. The series was moved up a day to accommodate for the Easter holiday.
