CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte softball team will welcome Atlantic 10 foes Saint Louis and Butler over the weekend in a pair of doubleheaders at D.L. Phillips Complex.
Charlotte (20-24 overall, 6-8 A-10) will host Saint Louis (22-18, 10-6) on Friday, April 26 for a single game at 4 p.m. The Niners will face SLU on Saturday, April 27 for a noon game.
The 49ers will cap off the weekend on Sunday with a twinbill against Butler (18-24, 7-9) at 12 p.m. which will also serve as Senior Day for Briana Gwaltney, Kalie Lang, Lindsey Holloman, and Chelsea Stamey.
Charlotte is currently ninth in league standings, while Saint Louis is sixth and Butler is eighth. The A-10 tournament will feature the top six teams in the conference.
The Billikens were on a five-game winning streak until they lost game two of a doubleheader to conference-leading Saint Joseph’s on Sunday. SLU fell 5-3 in nine innings. However they rebounded with a pair of road wins against Butler on Wednesday.
The Bulldogs are on a four-game losing streak after being swept by Temple and SLU this week.
For the first time this season, Charlotte’s team batting average recently fell below .300. The Niners are hitting .298 but still hold an advantage over SLU (.231) and Butler (.257).
Saint Louis is led by Jessica Van Nostrand (.305). Van Nostrand leads the Billikens in hits (38), runs (23), and doubles (10). Butler’s offense has six players who have tallied at least 20 hits this season. However, the Billikens and Bulldogs will have to face Charlotte’s Katie Watkins (12-14) who is fourth in the A-10 in strikeouts (130).
SLU pitchers Laney Kneib (11-6) and Brianna Lore (11-12) have a combined earned run average of 2.68. The Bulldogs have a ton of depth in their pitching efforts but is led by Jenny Esparza who has a 2.91 ERA and a team-leading 100 strikeouts.
This weekend’s games will wrap up the 49ers conference home schedule as their regular-season home finale will take place on Tuesday, April 30 against Winthrop.
