STARKVILLE, Miss. - Briana Gwaltney has been named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Mid-Atlantic Region Second Team, the NFCA announced Thursday. The All-Region teams honor student-athletes from the Association's 10 regions. Gwaltney was one of 263 players representing 129 different institutions that comprise this season's regional teams, including first and second teams for each region.
The all-region teams were chosen by NFCA member coaches from each region, and the honorees will now be eligible for selection to one of three 2012 NFCA Division I All-American teams. In addition, conference pitchers and players of the year not selected to the regional teams were added for All-America consideration.
Gwaltney, a junior from Anaheim Hills, Calif., started all 55 games for the 49ers at left field. She ended the season with a .304 batting average, and is tops on the squad in hits (52), runs scored (39), home runs (14), RBI (40), total bases (104) and slugging percentage (.608). In addition, she is tied for second on the team in doubles (8), triples (1) and walks (28). Her home run total has helped shatter the school record for homers in a season and career.
The Atlantic 10 leader in home runs and total bases, Gwaltney tied for first in the conference in RBIs and second in slugging percentage. She also ranked 30th nationally in home runs on the season.
This is the second All-Region honor of Gwaltney's career, as she was named to the Second Team as an outfielder last season as well. The slugger was also honored by College Sports Madness as the Atlantic 10 Field Player of the Year and First Team All-Conference outfielder. In addition, Gwaltney is a two-time First Team All-Atlantic 10 honoree and former All-Rookie squad member.
Gwaltney helped Charlotte to a 29-26 record and 10-10 mark in the Atlantic 10. The Niners earned their seventh straight bid to the Atlantic 10 Tournament, finishing fifth in the conference standings.
