The Charlotte 49ers softball team hits the road for a six-game road swing beginning this Friday, seeing teams in the top and bottom of the Atlantic 10 conference along the way. The Niners (25-19; 8-6 A10) will face the Rhode Island Rhodies (18-29-1; 2-11-1 A10) in single game contests Friday (3 p.m.) and Saturday (12 p.m.) before remaining up North to take on the A10-leading UMass Minutewomen (28-11; 13-0 A10) in a doubleheader Sunday (12 p.m.).
Charlotte has won eight consecutive conference games, having swept George Washington, La Salle, St. Bonaventure, Saint Louis for an impressive win streak. The 49ers are rolling with wins in 11 of their last 12 games overall, including an impressive 10-6 victory over rival and 20th-ranked North Carolina Tuesday at home.
Charlotte is 9-4 all-time against Rhode Island but 3-14 in the all-time series with UMass. Last season, the 49ers swept Rhode Island at home, 7-3 and 5-4 in a series that featured pairs of RBIs from Bri Gwaltney, Lindsey Holloman and Kalie Lang. Charlotte split with the Minutewomen last year in a pair of one-run games, the second of which was a 14-inning marathon that saw Charlotte come away with a 3-2 victory.
Gwaltney leads the 49ers and the Atlantic 10 with a record 14 home runs on the year. Batting .328, she also leads the team with 44 hits, 36 runs scored and 37 driven in. Rookie Alex Rogers is first on the squad in batting average, hitting .336 with a team-high 34 walks. She ranks third in the A10 in on-base percentage at .479. Classmate Jackie Kleinsmith is also above the .300 mark, hitting .301 with four doubles and two homers. Junior Kalie Lang has a team-best 10 doubles on the year.
