CHARLOTTE, N.C.  - The Charlotte 49ers softball team (22-19) is set to take on the nationally-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels (32-10) at home Wednesday afternoon in a single game at D.L. Phillips. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.

Charlotte has had tough luck against the #24 Tar heels in the past, posting an 11-56 mark in the all-time series. North Carolina took both games of last year's series in Chapel Hill, 4-0 and 6-2.

The Niners are coming off a 3-1 performance last weekend, led by sophomore pitcher Katie Watkins, who picked up all three wins in the circle for the 49ers. Charlotte split a non-conference doubleheader with Gardner-Webb Wednesday, falling 2-0 before winning the nightcap, 8-5. On Saturday, the green and white swept visiting St. Bonaventure, 5-4 and 5-0 to improve to 6-6 in the Atlantic 10. After a 0-6 conference start, Charlotte has now won six straight A10 contests.

Junior left fielder Bri Gwaltney continues to lead the 49ers offense with an impressive .347 batting average and school record 14 home runs. The Anaheim Hills, Calif. native is also tops on the squad in hits (43), RBIs (37), and runs scored (32). Freshman center fielder Alex Rogers is close behind, batting .330 on the year with 38 hits and 29 runs.

In the circle, rookie Lexi Betancourt leads the way with a 12-9 record and a 3.11 ERA. Watkins improved her overall record to 9-10 with a 4.40 ERA with a team-best 97 strikeouts.

As always, admission to all home regular season softball games is free and open to the public. In addition, live stats will be available via www.charlotte49ers.com and a live video stream will be broadcast for paying subscribers.
