SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - In their final day of competition in the San Diego Classic, the Charlotte 49ers softball team fell to Fresno State, 5-1 Sunday afternoon. Jackie Kleinsmith recorded two of three Niner hits in the game. With the loss, Charlotte drops to 9-10 on the season after a 1-4 record in the tournament. Fresno State improves to 12-7. Natalie Capone and Kleinsmith were the only players to record hits on the day, and it was Kleinsmith's second inning single that resulted in Niners' lone run in the game. Trailing 2-0, the rookie catcher led off the bottom of the second with a base hit to left field and was pinch run for by Hayley Lewis. Lewis ended up on third base after a pair of wild pitches, coming around to score on a fielding error by the Bulldogs' shortstop. That made the score 2-1. Charlotte had a good scoring chance in the third inning when Briana Gwaltney drew a walk and, like Lewis, reached third on wild pitches. Kleinsmith also walked to bring up a first-and-third situation, but Samantha Slade struck out to end the inning and strand the pair. Fresno State added a run in the fourth and two more in the sixth to put the game out to reach. Stesha Brazil's two-run double to center field scored teammates Brenna Moss and Maria Sio in the top of the sixth, securing the Bulldogs' win. Four different players had multiple hits for FSU, including Sio, who was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Right fielder Michelle Moses proved to be trouble as well, picking up a hit, a run, an RBI and a trio of walks for the Bulldogs. Pitcher Lexi Betancourt suffered the loss, surrendering five runs on 10 hits in the complete game effort. She struck out three and walked four. Reliever Destinee Levesque earned the win for Fresno State, going 5.2 innings and allowing no runs on just two hits. The 49ers return to the east coast to face UNC Greensboro Thursday, March 8th in a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. |
