CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Briana Gwaltney (Anaheim Hills, Calif. / Canyon) earned her first Atlantic 10 honor of the season when she was selected as the Rookie of the Week, announced today by the conference offices. Gwaltney is Charlotte's top freshman bat as the first baseman is batting .270 on the season, while starting every game of the season.

Her four home runs on the season ranks in a tie for second on the team and is also tied for fourth-most homers by a Charlotte freshman. Gwaltney has driven in 25 runs on the season ranking her third on the team in RBI. The 25 RBI also ranks as the fifth-most runs driven in by a Niner freshman.

Last week, Gwaltney recorded a hit in every game of the week including two for extra-bases in the series opener against Elon. Against the Phoenix, she blasted her fourth homer of the season, which nearly capped a Charlotte rally. On the week, she drove in three runs to help the Niners to a 3-1 record including a A-10 sweep of La Salle.

The 49ers return to action this week with a non-conference doubleheader against UNC Greensboro on Tuesday at 4 p.m. before facing off with George Washington on Friday and Saturday and then wrapping up the week with a Sunday twin-bill at Fordham. Charlotte is 34-13 on the season and 12-2 in A-10 play, which ties them in second place.
