CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte softball team split a pair of Atlantic 10 games against visiting Saint Louis, Friday afternoon at the D.L. Phillips Complex.
Charlotte (21-25, 7-9 A-10) won game one 4-2 and fell 6-4 to Saint Louis (23-19, 11-7) in game two.
In game one, Charlotte clinched an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Natalie Capone and Alex Rogers led off with back-to-back singles. Capone and Rogers advanced to second and third after a groundout but Samantha Slade helped the 49ers get on the board. With two outs, Slade singled to right field driving in Capone and Rogers to put Charlotte up 2-0.
Saint Louis tied the game in third inning. With one out, Lindsay Friedman hit a solo home run to cut Charlotte’s lead to 2-1. Laura Bohning singled to left field and Jessica Van Nostrand reached base after being hit by a pitch. Kelsey Biggs hit a double to centerfield, scoring Bohning and tying the game.
The Niners took advantage of three walks and a hit from Briana Gwaltney in the third inning to regain the lead 3-2.
Charlotte extended its advantage to 4-2 in the fourth inning. After Lang singled to centerfield, Capone blasted a RBI- triple, her first of the season to add a run for the 49ers.
The Niners’ defense rose to the occasion in the seventh inning after keeping the Billikens scoreless after they loaded the bases with no outs.
Katie Watkins (13-14) went the distance and tossed a complete game for Charlotte. She finished with a game-high three strikeouts. Brianna Lore recorded the loss for SLU and fell to 11-13.
Capone led the 49ers with a pair of hits. Slade was 1-for-3 with a game-leading three RBIs.
In game two, the Billikens used seven hits in the second inning to push to a 6-0 advantage.
Charlotte sliced SLU’s advantage to 6-2 in the fourth inning. Chelsea Ingersoll led off the inning with a double to left center. With one out Plemmons hit a RBI-double to right center. Plemmons’ double was her 13th of the season which leads the 49ers. A Saint Louis error allowed Kalie Lang to reach first and advanced Plemmons to third. Chelsea Lisikatos’ sacrifice fly to left field allowed Plemmons to score.
The Niners added two more runs in the sixth inning with hits from Plemmons and Lang to nip SLU’s advantage to 6-4. The 49ers were unable to get any closer as the Billikens recorded a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh to end the game.
Capone finished with two hits and notched her 18th multiple-hit game of the season. Plemmons was 2-for-3 with two runs and a RBI.
Lisikatos (6-10) recorded the loss for Charlotte. Watkins tossed 5.1 innings and didn’t allow any runs. SLU’s Laney Kneib improved to 12-6 in the circle and allowed five hits.
