Charlotte, N.C.- Coming off the 49er Invitational, the 49ers Softball team heads to Cullowhee, N.C. on Wednesday for a midweek contest against Western Carolina at 3 pm.
"It has been quite some time since we played Western Carolina. WCU came down here and played in one of our tournaments but that was a different team and a different make-up," said Coach Aimee DeVos. "We are just going to have to go off scouting reports. It is a new enviornment, we have never played in Cullowhee, it will be different for a lot of these players playing up in the mountains, it will change a lot of things."
Charlotte picked up four wins this weekend at the 49er Invitational moving to above .500 on the season. Conference USA Player of the Week, Jessica Plemmons, looks to continue her tear at the plate after hitting .650 last week with four doubles, two home runs and 13 RBI.
Jackie Kleinsmith leads the 49ers offensive end hitting .451 with four doubles, three home runs and 14 RBI. Samantha Slade leads the Niners with seven dingers and 19 RBI. Plemmons has tallied 19 RBI this season.
Lexi Betancourt will look to get back on track after picking up the loss against Georgetown on Sunday. Betancourt is 7-3 in the circle this season with 73 punchouts through 62.0 innings.
The Niners and the Catamounts do not have a lot of history through the years only meeting twice. Charlotte won the first meeting Feb 25, 2006 at home 11-3. Western Carolina picked up the win in the last meeting Feb 23, 2007, 2-4. This will be the first meeting for Charlotte in Cullowhee, N.C.
First pitch is slated for 3 pm at the Catamount Softball Complex.
Coach Aimee DeVos is looking for win number 500 in her career at Charlotte. DeVos is the winningest coach in Charlotte softball history.
