|Slade lifts 49ers over SBU, falls to Robert Morris|
Charlotte, N.C.- Charlotte 49ers softball went 1-1 in the opening day of the Green and White on Saturday afternoon. The Niners dropped a tough one against Robert Morris, 3-2 before bouncing back with a win over St. Bonaventure, 10-2.
Samantha Slade went 4-5 from the plate with three home runs, seven RBI and three runs scored on the day. Slade hit all three home runs in game two against St. Bonaventure. Jackie Kleinsmith went 4-6 from the plate with a home run and 2 RBI.
"These were two very different offensive games," said Coach Aimee DeVos. "We struggled to generate a consistent offense but are getting some timely homeruns but are still going to need to work on pushing the runs across all 7 innings. I want to see our defense become more consistent in the upcoming games."
"The bats came back alive in game two and we were impressively lead by Sam Slade's incredible offensive performance. The pitching and defense did a great job of shutting down a few potential rallies by SBU. We look forward to coming back tomorrow with strong offense and great defense."
Robert Morris jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning scoring in the opening two innings of the game.
RMU's Tess Apke opened the first inning with a walk. Jordan Gurganus followed that up with a base knock through the left side. A fielder's choice and a fielding error brought around Apke to plate the first run of the game.
Same as the first inning, RMU's Chelsea Siar singled up the middle to start the inning. A one out single up the middle by Apke scored Siar from second for a Colonial 2-0 lead.
Charlotte tied things up in the top of the sixth inning with a two-run shot by Jackie Kleinsmith. Sam Slade scored on the home run by Kleinsmith starting the inning with a hit-by-pitch.
Robert Morris took a slim 3-2 lead in the bottom half of the sixth inning for the games final run. Chelsea Evans started the rally with a base hit to left field. Apke pushed Evans into scoring position drawing a walk. Gurganus tallied home what would be the winning run with a base hit to right field plating Evans from second.
Chelsea Lisikatos (0-2) picked up the loss throwing six innings allowing three runs (two earned) off eight hits. Lisikatos struck out a season high five batters. Geena Badolato for the Colonials picked up the win tossing seven innings allowing two runs off five hits.
St. Bonaventure rallied in the first inning against Charlotte in the third game of the day but came up empty stranding the bases loaded.
Charlotte tallied three hits in the first inning but managed only one run. Samantha Slade hit the first of three home runs of the game in the first inning. Slade's first home run was a solo shot to straightaway centerfield for the Niners 1-0 lead.
Chelsea Lisikatos gave the Niners a 2-0 cushion with a solo shot to left centerfield in the third inning.
The Niners continued the attack in the fourth inning for a comfortable 7-0 lead. Jessie Fennell led off the inning with a single to centerfield. Lexi Betancourt followed that up with an infield single. Natalie Capone slapped the first pitch she saw passed a crashing third baseman for an infield single to load the bases. Sam Slade took a 2-1 pitch over the left centerfield wall to unload the bases for her second home run of the game. Lisikatos and Kleinsmith picked up back-to-back hits to keep the rally going with one out. Hayley Lewis loaded the bases once again with a full count walk. Jessica Plemmon's fielder's choice plated the fifth run of the inning scoring Lisikatos.
St. Bonaventure didn't go away quietly in the top of the fifth inning starting the inning with a Grace Rooney walk. Ashley Snider and Katie Sinclair strung back-to-back doubles together to plate the Bonnies only runs of the game. Rooney and Snider scored off the Sinclair double.
Natalie Capone singled to left field and advanced to second base on the attempted diving catch. The long ball once again worked for Slade as she hit her final home run of the game to left field giving the Niners a 9-2 lead. Slade has hit six home runs on the season and fifth in the past four games.
Charlotte grabbed the walk-off run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Paige Wall singled to left center on a 3-2 pitch. Chelsea Ingersoll reached on a throwing error by the shortstop sending wall to third. Jessie Fennell picked up her second hit of the game with a blooper to right center allowing Wall to score for the final run of the game.
Lexi Betancourt picked up her third win of the season in the circle pitching six innings allowing two runs off six hits and striking out a career high nine batters.
Alexis Sloat picked up the loss in the circle for the Bonniestossing 3.1 innings allowing seven runs off 12 hits. The Bonnies starnded 13 runners.
Samantha Slade's 3 HRs is the most in a single game. Slade's 7 RBIs is the most in a single game. Jackie Kleinsmith extended her hitting streak to seven games. Hayley Lewis' hitting streak ended at five games going 0-3 against Robert Morris. Slade extended her hitting streak to five games.
Aimee Devos is six games away from win number 500.
